AS WRITER: 'The Life of Cardboard' Mixed Media Project (Framed Film Festival & Soho Theatre)
The seed for 'The Life of Cardboard' was a simple image of a man in a cardboard suit, a man who could create anything he liked out of cardboard. What it became was a long-term mixed media project that has had development directed by Iskandar R. Sharazuddin since its genesis.
Initially intended as a collaborative filmmaking experiment where three filmmakers were invited to interpret the work it became a discussion on sustainability, environmental awareness, magic, super-powers, segregation, visual art and much more. In 2011 Iskandar's own Western Australian based company Ellandar Productions and another local producer, Planet Raw teamed together with writer-director Wayne Nicholson to develop a seven-minute atmospheric short film. The film was heavily stylised and abstract and was conceptualised by the initial creatives Luke Brennan & Iskandar R. Sharazuddin and then realised by Wayne Nicholson. The short film premiered at the State Theatre Centre of Western Australia at an evening of curated short films. It was further screened by the global pop-up film festival, Future Shorts and was awarded featured local short for Western Australia by the festival in November 2011. In 2013 'The Life of Cardboard' was featured as part of the KickstART Festival celebrating National Youth Week in Australia and was then selected to screen at the Barbican Centre in London for the 2013 Framed Film Festival. The film was nominated for Best Production Design (short form) at the 2013 Western Australian Screen Awards (WASA).
In 2013-2014 'The Life of Cardboard' was realised as a new piece of theatrical writing with support and mentorship from Soho Theatre Young Company, Penny Cliff and Nina Steiger. Iskandar R. Sharazuddin was the recipient of the 2014 Soho Young Writer's Award for the play which is currently still under development.
